March 23, 2024

The Regulation Amending the Regulation on the Incentivization of Building New Ships to Replace Turkish Flagged Ships to be Scrapped, provided by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, was published in the Official Gazette dated March 23, 2024, and numbered 32498, entered into force.

According to the regulation, the upper weight limit for the scrapping of commercial ships, maritime, and inland waterway vessels has been raised from 5,000 gross tons to 50,000 gross tons for those aged 20 years and older.

The requirement for applicants to apply annually in June to benefit from the scrap incentive has been removed.

Scrap incentive applications will be evaluated within the framework of the budget possibilities of the Ministry's circulating capital enterprise, considering the age, tonnage, and sailing region of the ship, for a maximum of 10 ships each year, provided that they do not exceed 50,000 gross tons.

The beneficiary whose application is accepted must enter into a contract with the contractor for the construction of the new ship within 7 months from the date of issuance of the incentive eligibility certificate and submit this contract to the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs.

During the application stage, either the Sea Worthiness Certificate, Watercraft Suitability Certificate, or Inland Water Suitability Certificate for the ship to be scrapped will be required.
